in an attempt to demonstrate to my class the difference between abstract and concrete language, i had each of them quickly say the first thing that popped into their head when i said the word "beautiful."

i was trying to get them to understand that beauty, like moral and good and success and love are all in the eyes of the beholder and that students should always define what they mean by those abstractions.

as i went around the room, i pointed at one student and said "beautiful. go." without hesitation he replied, "you."

jesus christ. we'll see how he feels after i return his first paper.
